To establish situational awareness at sea;

GÖKTÜRK-1
Optical and SAR imagery are used together so that targets on the sea surface can be detected regardless of cloud cover or darkness. The backscatter difference in a SAR image makes it possible to distinguish a hull from the sea surface, so vessels that do not broadcast their position also enter the list.
Detections from successive passes are matched to derive routes, and deviations from the expected track are flagged. Oil spills appear as dark patches in SAR imagery because the slick dampens the waves, and are reported together with an area calculation.
